National Defence Academy (NDA)

Description

The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the Army, Navy and Air Force train together before proceeding to their respective service academies for specialised training. It is one of the most prestigious career routes after Class 12.

Cadets undergo a rigorous three-year programme combining academic education (B.Sc / B.A / B.Tech) with intensive military training, physical conditioning, leadership development and outdoor activities. The academy is located at Khadakwasla, Pune.

After NDA, cadets move to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Naval Academy (INA) or Air Force Academy (AFA) for a final year of specialised training before being commissioned as officers. The career offers honour, leadership, excellent pay and lifelong respect.

Entrance Exams

UPSC NDA & NA Examination

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

National-level written exam with Mathematics and General Ability Test; held twice a year.

SSB Interview (5-Day Selection)

Services Selection Board (SSB)

A five-day selection process testing intelligence, personality, leadership and physical fitness.

Medical Examination

Armed Forces Medical Board

Strict medical and physical standards must be met for final selection.

Job Roles

Lieutenant (Army) / Sub-Lieutenant (Navy) / Flying Officer (Air Force)

Commissioned officer leading troops, ships or aircraft after academy training.

Combat Officer

Leads soldiers in combat and operational roles across various terrains.

Pilot / Navigator (Air Force & Navy)

Flies fighter, transport or helicopter missions for the armed forces.

Staff & Command Appointments (with seniority)

Takes on higher command, staff and strategic roles after years of service.

Salary

Fresher (Lieutenant / Sub-Lieutenant)

₹56,100 – ₹70,000 / month

Starting pay as per 7th CPC; plus allowances, free housing and medical.

Mid-level (Captain / Lieutenant Commander)

₹70,000 – ₹1,20,000 / month

Pay rises with rank and years of service; generous allowances included.

Senior (Major / Colonel & above)

₹1,20,000 – ₹2,50,000+ / month

Senior officers earn excellent pay, facilities and post-retirement pension.
